Core barrels are used to collect rock samples from a drill hole. Drilling with classic core barrels involves lowering the core barrel to the bottom of the hole using a drill string, drilling a section of the hole the length of the core barrel, and then bringing the core barrel to the surface, extracting the core from the core barrel and placing it in core boxes.
